Max Mewsic : My Cat and Business Partner

(reposted in response to  the Postal Service commemorative stamps honoring the Humane Society)

Mr. Max Mewsic is my boy.

It's wonderful to have a cat (he doesn't know he's a cat) that can carry on an intelligent conversation with you.

He wakes me up at sunrise, says 'I love you' (mawwooovyooo), can ask for milk (maaaallkk), cookies (mwoooookeeee) and cheese (meeeesshhh), tells me to open (mawpeen) the door so he can look for his girlfriend Lucy, and he plays the piano.

When I'm looking at contracts, answering the phone, consulting with the office about one thing or another, fixing supper, listening to the Beatles, taking a shower, getting dressed, sleeping, reading the paper, blogging, or watching Star Trek the Next Generation (he loves to watch Star Trek with me, and is enthralled by the Clingons and the android Mr. Data-I have all the episodes) he's right there with me.

You should see him go nuts when I do lazy eights with the cursor while he slaps at the computer monitor. I always have to be careful not to leave the aquarium screensaver on when leave I the house. And you'd never believe it unless you saw it, but he pulls me by the pants leg and tries to keep me from leaving when I have to go to the office or someplace, and I always have to tell him "daddy's coming back", or he gets upset. I think he knows and understands that I love the real estate business, too.

He just turned ten and I love him. You would, too.

Be kind to your pets. Show them affection, love and care. They will always love you. They're human, too, and members of our families !

David, I love Mr. Max Mewsic!   He looks EXACTLY like my cat (the one my parents had in CA).  It was a girl and she was so smart.  Don't get me started, or this comment will become a blog...

Thank you for that loving blog!  I loved reading it!

Mr. Max Mewsic, this one's for you!

PS:  Please post this on our Optimist board!  We have a lot of animal lovers there.  Thank you, David!

I have two of the creatures and they have no idea that they are cats.  One doesn't have more than one brain cell and the other doesn't think about anything but sleeping.  Of course at 11 & 14 they are forgiven for being worthless but entirely loveable!  Mr. Max Mewsic looks likes my daughters cat Mittens who lives the high live in the UK!!

Hi David,

He's a beautiful cat, and he looks very lovable, indeed.

We lost our Mr. Max last year, a very special fellow, who lived to the wise old age of 21.  I first met Mr. Max, about ten years ago.  He was an avid hunter and considered his kill the finest gift he could bring his new mom.  Well, I screamed!  Ever after, he appeared at the door with a flower or a reasonable facsimile.  What a guy!

Not long before Mr. Max died, we brought in three stray kittens, two of whom are brothers.  They are a joy!

I'll admit, I'm not much of a cat person but Mr. Max sounds like a pretty cool fellow.  Any cat that likes Star Trek can't be all bad, right?

Hi Cindy. Sounds like those cats are quite a handful. Always nice to hear from you.

I know you loved Mr. Max a bunch, Marie. It's a blessing that he had such a great, long life. So good to hear from you.

Thank you, Renee'. He's quite a guy. Hope your having a really great weekend.

Hi Jesse and Kathy. You'd fall out of your chair laughing if you could see him run to the television to squat and watch Star Trek the instant he hears Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) start that preamble...."Space...the final frontier...." And when he sees the android Data on the television he sits up and stares at him like a mesmerized kid fixated on a new toy. Another thing he loves to do is listen to old recordings, especially of Al Jolson. If I put a 78rpm on the turntable of Al Jolson singing he'll jump up in the chair and sit there and listen to Jolson sing like he singing to him. I've also got an office chair that spins around in front of my computer hutch, and if you say, "it's time to go to the moon" he'll jump up in the chair and paw at you until you spin him around in the chair. If I play Aram Khachaturian's 'Sabre Dance' on the piano he starts chasing his tail and darts back and forth across the room. I've got two Steinways and he'll play on the other Steinway like we were doing a duet if I play boogie woogie on mine. To know this little guy is to love him.

Posted by David Saks ((retired)) about 12 years ago

David:  Wait ... two Steinway pianos?  I am sooo jealous... I would LOVE to have one!  If you feel especially generous, just let me know and I'll drive over to Memphis to take one of them for a little visit to Nashville!

Posted by Jan Evett, Broker Associate, 20 years+ in real estate (The Premier Property Group LLC) about 12 years ago

Jan , Mr. Mewsic and I couldn't play boogie woogie together. He's a Memphis boy and likes the blues and Elvis. He likes to surf the web with me for the listings in Nashville's Brentwood on occasion just to remember what multi-million dollar properties look like. It's a nice escape from the poverty and joblessness of north and south Memphis. So is playing the piano.

Very nice!    The "fur people" in our lives keep us "human", right?

Posted by Li Read, Caring expertise...knowledge for you! (Sea to Sky Premier Properties (Salt Spring)) about 10 years ago

They sure do, Li. They're "little people" and love us in return for the compassion and care we demonstrate. They have feelinga and share them with us. They have emotional, physical and nutritional needs, and they depend on us when we domesticate them and adapt them to civilization, Nature never intended for them to overcome the wilderness, but to live in harmony with it. Mankind must recognize that in order to manage their needs responsibly where any society exists in an advanced state of social development.
