Investor fraud is a serious national problem. The FBI reports that our country’s recent financial crisis has resulted in an unprecedented rise in investment fraud schemes, involving thousands of victims and staggering losses. Florida is no exception.

In an effort to raise public awareness about this crime, the Department of Justice is hosting a series of regional investment fraud summits in select cities across the United Sates. The Southeastern Regional Investor Fraud Summit (Investor Fraud Summit) will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012, at Miami Dade College, downtown Wolfson Campus, Chapman Conference Center, 245 N.E. 4th St., Bldg. 3, Room 3210 in Miami, Florida, 33132, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Investor Fraud Summit will assemble national experts, federal and state law enforcement, community leaders, and victims to discuss issues associated with investment fraud schemes and help educate the investing public on how to avoid falling prey to fraud.

Wifredo A. Ferrer, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, will be among the featured speakers. U.S. Attorney Robert O’Neill (Middle District of Florida) and U.S. Attorney Pamela Marsh (Northern District of Florida) will co-moderate the Investor Fraud Summit. They will be joined by U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance (Northern District of Alabama) and other U.S. Attorneys and Department of Justice officials. Other confirmed participants include Eric Bustillo, Regional Director of the Securities and Exchange Commission; David Nanz, White-Collar Crime Coordinator for the FBI’s Miami Field Office; Cindy Liebes, Regional Director, Federal Trade Commission; Michael Gavin, Vice President of Communications, Better Business Bureau; Christine Kieffer, FINRA, Investor Education Foundation; and Wayne Piccone, Seniors vs. Crime. In addition, fraud victims will share their personal experiences to help educate the investing public on how to spot these schemes and avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

The Investor Fraud Summit is open to the public, and members of the South Florida community are strongly encouraged to attend.

This summit is part of the ongoing efforts of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force which, was created by President Obama in November 2009 to wage an aggressive, coordinated, and proactive effort to investigate and prosecute financial crimes.
